Day 1
Your journey begins at Guangzhou Baiyun Railway Station, where you are welcomed aboard the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express. Settle into your cabin and take time to discover the train’s inviting public spaces. As Guangzhou recedes into the evening, meet your onboard hosts and fellow travellers while the train begins its journey north.

Day 2
Xinyang - The Art of Maojian Tea
Before the grand landscapes of Xinjiang unfold, pause in Xinyang for a gentle introduction to the culture of Central China. Visit a renowned tea garden devoted to Xinyang Maojian, one of the country’s celebrated green teas, and discover the craftsmanship behind its delicate leaves through a guided tasting.
After a relaxed locally inspired lunch, return to the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express and continue west, refreshed and ready for the remarkable journey ahead.




Day 3
Arrive in Hami in the early afternoon and journey across the Gobi to Dahaidao Devil City, one of the region’s most striking desert landscapes. Shaped over time by wind and erosion, its dramatic rock formations resemble ancient castles, palaces and forgotten cities rising from the wilderness.
Explore this remarkable natural setting at a relaxed pace, with time for photography, before returning to Hami for the evening.

Day 4
Hami - Sculpted by Wind and Time
Settle into the unhurried rhythm of rail travel as the XIAOXIANG continues west. Enjoy live cultural performances, traditional Chinese craft activities and relaxed moments over tea or coffee. Karaoke, mahjong and other onboard entertainment are also available, while ever-changing landscapes unfold beyond your window.




Day 5
Hami - Heritage and Rhythm
After breakfast, visit Hami King’s Palace, the historic residence of Hami’s former rulers, and discover a fascinating chapter of the region’s cultural past. Continue to a performance of the Twelve Muqam, where expressive music, dance and colourful costumes bring the traditions of Xinjiang vividly to life.
In the afternoon, return to the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express for the journey to Urumqi. Arrive in the evening and transfer to your hotel for a restful night.




Day 6
Urumqi - Alpine Beauty and Bazaar Life
Journey into the Tianshan Mountains to visit Heavenly Lake, a serene alpine lake framed by forests and the snow-capped Bogda Peak. Enjoy time to explore the lakeside scenery and take in the crisp mountain air.
Later, return to Urumqi and discover the Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar, a lively showcase of regional architecture, crafts, flavours and traditions. In the evening, rejoin the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express for the overnight journey to Beitun.




Day 7
Kanas - Into the Northern Wilderness
Arrive in Beitun this morning and continue by road to Jiadengyu, the gateway to Kanas Scenic Area. Travel by scenic shuttle into a remarkable landscape of forested mountains, sweeping valleys and the tranquil waters of Kanas Lake.
Spend the afternoon exploring this remote corner of northern Xinjiang, where dramatic alpine scenery and pristine natural beauty create one of the journey’s most memorable settings. Later, transfer to your hotel for the evening.






Day 8
Hemu - Village Life and Painted Landscapes
After breakfast, journey to Hemu Village, a peaceful settlement of traditional wooden houses surrounded by grasslands, birch forests and the clear waters of the Hemu River. Stroll through the village and ascend the Haden Viewing Platform for sweeping views across the valley and rooftops below.
Continue via Burqin to Five-Coloured Beach, where vivid Yardang formations rise along one side of the Irtysh River while forests line the opposite bank. In the evening, return to Beitun and rejoin the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express for the overnight journey to Yining.




Day 9
Sayram Lake - The Blue Jewel of the Tianshan
After arriving by train, journey into the western Tianshan Mountains to Sayram Lake, Xinjiang’s largest alpine lake. Framed by open grasslands and distant peaks, its luminous blue waters create one of the region’s most captivating landscapes.
Pause for a leisurely afternoon tea beside the lake, taking in the tranquillity and sweeping mountain views. Later, continue through the scenic Ili Valley to Nalati and settle into your hotel for the evening.






Day 10
Nalati & Bayinbuluk - Across the Tianshan Grasslands
Begin the day in Nalati Grassland, where alpine meadows, snow-capped mountains and pine forests create a beautifully layered landscape. Experience the traditions of the local Kazakh community while enjoying the fresh mountain air and open scenery.
Continue along a scenic section of the Duku Highway, winding through the Tianshan Mountains to Bayinbuluk Grassland. Here, vast wetlands and sweeping pastures surround the graceful curves of the Kaidu River, with distant views towards Swan Lake. Settle into your hotel after a memorable journey across one of Xinjiang’s most spectacular regions.


Day 11
Tianshan Grand Canyon & Kuqa
After breakfast, travel to the Tianshan Mysterious Grand Canyon, where towering red cliffs, narrow passages and sculpted rock formations reveal the power of wind and water over millions of years. Enjoy time to explore this dramatic landscape set against the southern Tianshan Mountains.
Later, continue to Kuqa and rejoin the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express for the overnight journey to Kashgar.
Day 12
Arrive in Kashgar and travel along the China–Pakistan Friendship Highway into the dramatic landscapes of the Pamir Plateau. Pause at Karakul Lake, where dark blue waters reflect the surrounding snow-capped peaks.
Continue to Stone City, an ancient Silk Road fortress overlooking the valley, before strolling across the wetlands of Golden Grassland, framed by open pastures and distant mountains. Later, settle into your hotel in Tashkurgan.

Day 13
Tashkurgan - Traditions of the Pamirs
Begin the day with a visit to a local Tajik family, offering a warm introduction to the traditions, daily life and hospitality of the Pamir communities.
Continue to White Sand Lake, a tranquil high-altitude lake framed by pale dunes and distant snow-capped peaks. After time to enjoy the serene landscape, return to Kashgar and settle into your hotel for the evening.


Day 14
Kashgar - Living Heritage of the Silk Road
Explore the winding lanes and lively courtyards of Kashgar Old City. Where scheduled, witness the traditional city-opening ceremony, with music, dance and colourful costumes offering a memorable welcome to this historic Silk Road city.
Continue to Id Kah Mosque, known for its distinctive Islamic and Uyghur architectural influences, before visiting the Fragrant Concubine Garden, which traces the story and cultural legacy of one of Kashgar’s most renowned historical figures. In the evening, rejoin the XIAOXIANG, Southern Express for the overnight journey to Korla.






Day 15
Korla - Where Desert Meets Water
Arrive in Korla this morning and travel to Lop Nur People’s Village, where the Taklamakan Desert, the Tarim River and ancient poplar forests meet. Discover a traditional way of life shaped by this remote landscape, with time to explore the riverside woodland and desert scenery.
Later, continue to the peaceful wetlands of Bosten Lake, where reedbeds and wild water lilies spread across the water. After a leisurely visit, return to Korla and settle into your hotel for the evening.
Day 16
Aboard the XIAOXIANG - Culture in Motion
Depart Chongqing and begin the final journey south aboard the XIAOXIANG. Enjoy a relaxed farewell day with live performances, cultural activities, onboard entertainment and time to share favourite memories with fellow travellers.
After an overnight journey, arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun Railway Station the following morning. Bid farewell to the onboard team as your remarkable journey across China comes to a close.


Day 17
Chongqing - A City of Lights
Depart Korla and enjoy a leisurely day aboard the train as the journey continues towards Chongqing. Take part in cultural performances and traditional craft activities, relax over tea or coffee, or enjoy karaoke, mahjong and other onboard entertainment. Between activities, watch the changing landscapes unfold beyond your window.
Days 18-19
The Journey Home
Spend the day travelling through China’s ever-changing scenery before arriving in Chongqing in the evening. Celebrated internationally for its dramatic skyline, illuminated bridges and extraordinary hillside architecture, the city is especially captivating after dark.
Transfer to your hotel and enjoy an introduction to Chongqing’s famous night views, where glowing towers rise above the meeting point of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers.
