Your luxury rail adventure begins aboard the Xiaoxiang Express, travelling towards the spectacular wetlands of Panjin. As the landscape gradually transforms from southern China to the northeast, enjoy leisurely days on board featuring fine dining, cultural performances and a variety of onboard experiences.

Day 3

Panjin — Red Beach Wetlands

Arrive in Panjin, the famous City of Wetlands, and explore one of China’s most extraordinary coastal landscapes — Red Beach.

Stretching across the Liaohe River Delta, this natural wonder is known as the “World’s Red Coastline”, where vast fields of Suaeda salsa create a spectacular crimson landscape that changes from tender red in spring to deep purple in autumn.

Walk along the scenic wetlands where the red shoreline meets blue skies, migratory birds and endless reed fields. Panjin is also renowned as a habitat for the rare Red-crowned Crane and the Saunders’s Gull, offering a unique glimpse into the harmony between nature and wildlife.

Visit the Red Beach Wetland Science Museum, where interactive exhibitions reveal the unique ecosystem of the Liaohe River Delta and China’s efforts in wetland conservation.

Day 4

After breakfast, explore the spectacular Reed Wetlands & Crab Beach Wetland, located in the Liaohe River Delta, one of China’s most important coastal wetland ecosystems.

Known for its endless reed fields, tidal landscapes and rich biodiversity, this vast wetland sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to experience the harmony between water, wildlife and nature. More than 200 bird species inhabit the area, including the elegant Red-crowned Crane, while the surrounding waters are famous for local delicacies such as Panjin rice and Chinese mitten crab.

Enjoy the peaceful scenery of green reed seas, winding waterways and seasonal wetlands before boarding the Xiaoxiang Express and continuing your journey north towards Harbin, the “Ice City” of China.

Day 5

Harbin — European Charm & Ice Wonders

Arrive in Harbin, the legendary “Ice City” of northern China. After breakfast, begin exploring this fascinating city where Russian heritage and Chinese culture blend together.

Stroll along Central Street, Harbin’s iconic pedestrian avenue lined with beautifully preserved European-style architecture. Built in 1900, the street showcases a unique mix of Renaissance, Baroque and Byzantine influences.

Visit the Flood Control Monument, a symbol of Harbin’s resilience and a landmark along the scenic Songhua River waterfront. Continue to Saint Sophia Cathedral Square, where the magnificent Byzantine-style architecture reflects the city’s rich multicultural history.

Explore Sun Island Scenic Area, a peaceful riverside retreat famous for its forests, gardens and elegant European-style villas. Later, experience the magic of the Harbin Ice and Snow World Indoor Theme Park, where spectacular ice sculptures, colourful lighting and immersive technology create a year-round winter wonderland.

In the evening, board the Xiaoxiang Express and continue your journey to Heihe.

Day 6

Heihe — China-Russia Border Experiences

Discover the fascinating history of China’s northern frontier with a visit to Aihui Ancient Town, once the residence of the Qing Dynasty’s Heilongjiang military government. Explore the Aihui Historical Exhibition Hall and surrounding historic landmarks, learning about the complex history of China-Russia relations.

Visit the China-Russia Heilongjiang Bridge Park for panoramic views across the river towards Blagoveshchensk, Russia, followed by a visit to Daheihe Island, a scenic riverside area overlooking the neighbouring country.

Explore the China-Russia Ethnic Culture Park, where visitors can experience the traditions of the Oroqen, Daur, Manchu and Russian communities through cultural displays and interactive activities.

Complete the day at the Memorial Hall of Chinese in Russia, which tells the century-long story of overseas Chinese communities and cultural exchanges between China and Russia.

Day 6

Heihe — China-Russia Border Experiences

Cross the Heilongjiang River to Blagoveshchensk, the historic capital of Russia’s Amur Region and one of the most important cities in the Russian Far East.

Explore the city’s landmarks including Lenin Square, the Triumphal Arch, Victory Square, and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. Visit the Amur Regional Local History Museum to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the region.

Admire the elegant architecture of an Orthodox Church, before visiting the historic Russian-style Railway Station, located along the famous 50 Years of October Street.

Enjoy a Russian-style lunch and experience the unique atmosphere of a city where European traditions meet the landscapes of the Far East.

Day 7

Journey to Fuyuan — Across China’s Northern Frontier

Relax aboard the train as we continue east through the magnificent landscapes of Northeast China towards Fuyuan, the easternmost city of mainland China. Enjoy scenic views, onboard activities and the comfort of slow rail travel.

Day 8

Fuyuan — China’s Easternmost Frontier

Arrive in Fuyuan, known as the “Easternmost City of China”, located at the gateway of China’s sunrise frontier.

Visit Dongji Pavilion, the iconic landmark standing at the highest point of China’s easternmost region. With its elegant traditional wooden architecture and panoramic views, it offers a memorable viewpoint over the vast landscapes where China welcomes the first rays of morning sunlight.

Explore Dongji Fish Market, a lively riverside market showcasing the authentic flavours and daily life of this remote border town. Discover local specialties including fresh river fish, traditional Northeast Chinese snacks and the famous cuisine of the Heilongjiang River region.

Stroll through Fuyuan Riverside Park, located along the China–Russia border river. Follow the scenic waterfront paths and experience the unique atmosphere of standing beside the boundary between two countries, with Russia visible across the Heilongjiang River.

Day 9

Fuyuan — Heixiazi Island & China’s Eastern Frontier

After breakfast, travel to Zhuaji Hezhen Ethnic Village, home to the Hezhen people, one of China’s smallest ethnic groups. Experience a warm traditional welcome and discover the unique culture, customs and river-based lifestyle of this ancient community.

Continue to Heixiazi Island (Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island), a remarkable island shared by China and Russia and one of the world’s rare inland border islands. Along the way, cross the impressive Wusu Bridge, an architectural landmark symbolising modern engineering in China’s northeast frontier.

Visit Dongji Pagoda, an iconic landmark at China’s eastern edge, inspired by traditional Chinese architecture and offering beautiful views across the surrounding landscape.

Continue to Dongji Square, known as the “Easternmost Point of Mainland China”, where the Heilongjiang and Wusuli Rivers meet. From here, enjoy views across the border towards Russia and experience the unique atmosphere of standing at the far eastern frontier of China.

Later, board the Xiaoxiang Express and continue towards Hulin.

Day 10

Hulin — Borderland History & the Ussuri River

Arrive in Hulin and journey towards the remote landscapes of the Ussuri River, one of Northeast China’s most historically significant frontier regions.

Take in distant views of Zhenbao Island, a small island on the Chinese side of the Ussuri River. As the island lies within a restricted military area, visits are limited to viewing from the river and are subject to local regulations.

Continue to Hutou Fortress, a vast former military complex built by the Japanese Kwantung Army during the Second World War. Often associated with the final battles of World War II in Northeast Asia, its underground passages and surviving fortifications offer a powerful insight into the region’s wartime history.

Visit the historic Hutou Guandi Temple, an atmospheric riverside temple dating back to the Qing Dynasty, before continuing to the Memorial Park of the End of World War II, a solemn site commemorating those who lived through and sacrificed during the final stage of the conflict.

Complete the day at the monumental World’s Largest Tiger Sculpture, an iconic landmark overlooking the Ussuri River.

Day 11

Xingkai Lake — Nature & Frontier Heritage

Depart for Xingkai Lake (Khanka Lake), one of Northeast Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, located along the China-Russia border.

Here, endless blue waters meet the horizon, creating a breathtaking landscape where the lake and sky seem to merge into one. Enjoy the peaceful beauty of the shoreline, with its wide sandy beaches and refreshing waters surrounded by the untouched scenery of Northeast China.

Continue to the General Wang Zhen Memorial Hall, which tells the remarkable story of the development of the Great Northern Wilderness (Beidahuang). Through historical exhibits, photographs and preserved artefacts, discover how generations of pioneers transformed this vast frontier into one of China’s most important agricultural regions.

In the afternoon, board the train and continue towards Dunhua.

Day 12

Journey to Changbai Mountain

Arrive in Dunhua in the evening, then continue by road to Erdaobaihe Town, the gateway to the magnificent Changbai Mountain.

Rest and prepare for tomorrow’s exploration of one of Northeast China’s most spectacular natural wonders.

Day 13

Changbai Mountain — A Sacred Landscape of Forests & Volcanoes

After breakfast, depart for Changbai Mountain North Slope Scenic Area, one of Northeast China’s most spectacular natural wonders.

Travel through vast primeval forests and ascend towards Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), the legendary crater lake resting on the summit of Changbai Mountain. Take a scenic shuttle journey through the mountain landscape before reaching the viewing platform, where breathtaking views stretch across the turquoise waters and the surrounding volcanic peaks, with North Korea visible beyond the lake.

Visit Changbai Waterfall, where water from Heavenly Lake cascades down the mountain slopes, and discover the tranquil beauty of Lvyuantan (Green Deep Pool), known for its crystal-clear emerald waters surrounded by lush forests.

Experience the cultural heritage of Northeast China with a Manchu cultural experience, including traditional ginseng digging, a Manchu wedding ceremony and a ride on a classic Northeast Chinese horse-drawn flower carriage.

Visit a local Royal Deer Farm, where guests can observe and interact with deer in a peaceful forest setting.

Day 14

Dandong — Along the Yalu River Frontier

Arrive in Shenyang and travel by road to Dandong, a unique border city located along the Yalu River, facing North Korea across the water.

Visit the iconic Yalu River Broken Bridge, a historic landmark that witnessed the turbulent years of the Korean War. Standing on the bridge, enjoy panoramic views of the river and the contrasting landscapes on both sides of the border.

Discover the historic China-North Korea Border Gate, Boundary Marker No.19 and Railway Museum, learning about the region’s railway heritage and its important role throughout modern history.

Visit the Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, featuring exhibitions, historical displays and outdoor military collections that present the history and memories of the conflict.

End the day at Andong Old Street, a nostalgic cultural district inspired by the former name of Dandong. Explore traditional architecture, local crafts, performances and the atmosphere of old Northeast China.

Shenyang — Imperial Heritage & Modern History

After breakfast, explore Shenyang, the historic capital of Northeast China and a city where imperial traditions meet modern urban life.

Visit Marshal Zhang’s Mansion (Former Residence of Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang), also known as the “Young Marshal’s Mansion”. This elegant complex was once the residence and office of Zhang Zuolin, one of the most influential figures in early 20th-century Northeast China, and his son Zhang Xueliang. Explore its historic courtyards, European-style buildings and preserved interiors.

Continue to the magnificent Shenyang Imperial Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s most important imperial landmarks. Built during the reign of Emperor Huang Taiji in the 17th century, the palace showcases the unique architectural style of the early Qing Dynasty and the rich heritage of the Manchu people.

Enjoy free time at Zhongjie Pedestrian Street, Shenyang’s historic commercial centre with nearly 400 years of history. Discover local shops, traditional flavours and the vibrant atmosphere of this famous Northeast China street.

In the evening, board the Xiaoxiang Express and begin your return journey.

Dandong — Along the Yalu River Frontier

Relax aboard the Xiaoxiang Express as the train travels south towards Guangzhou. Enjoy the changing landscapes of China from your private cabin, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences, cultures and natural wonders discovered along the way.

As the journey comes to an end, arrive in Guangzhou, bringing your Northeast China adventure to a memorable conclusion.
